The judgment of Gog

January 15, 2012

God’s judgment falls upon the armies of Gog and Magog in Ezekiel 38:18-23, when they invade the land of Israel. In Revelation 20, this invasion is interpreted as deceived people from all parts of the earth who assault the camp of the saints, and the beloved city, which refers to the Christian church. In Hebrews 11:16, the promised land is no longer the earthly Canaan, but is now “a better country, that is, an heavenly.” The land of Israel in Ezekiel’s prophecy represents spiritual things, and the promised inheritance of the saints, including a proper understanding of prophecy.

Ezekiel 38:17 says that the armies of Gog come against the prophets of Israel. Obviously, that does not apply to a military invasion. But, it may apply to individuals, organizations and teachings which misinterpret the prophecies of Scripture and mislead the saints. In the table below, each of the elements included in the judgment of Gog is listed in the column at the left and related scriptures are shown in the column on the right.

Ezekiel 38:18-23 Comments & related Scriptures
in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel Taking the land of Israel in its spiritual sense suggested above, a great shaking in the land suggests the fundamental beliefs and interpretations held by people will be shaken. Jesus may have alluded to this when he said “the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.” [Matthew 24:29]

Other related scriptures are:

Zechariah 14:4-5
And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.  And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence The universal scope of the threat echoes the scope of the flood, except that here, fishes are included. The fish may represent potential believers, [Matthew 13:47-48] birds the saints, [Matthew 13:30-32] and beasts of the field and creeping things other people of the world. [Acts 10:12]

Genesis 7:23
And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Revelation 14:6-7
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

In Zechariah’s prophecy, the enemies of God are smitten with a spiritual plague, that affects the eyes, and the tongue, and the flesh. The eyes consuming away in their holes represents inability to understand spiritual things, and the tongue consuming away in their mouth represents being unable to answer.
and with blood Isaiah 34:5-6
For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment. By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.
