Are Joel’s army and the hordes of Gog & Magog the same?

February 9, 2011

Are the prophecies of Joel and Ezekiel about a great invasion parallel? That is, do they both describe the same event? Joel said that the great army of his prophecy was unique; “a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.” [Joel 2:2] There are many similarities between his prophecy and Ezekiel’s. Both armies come from the north, both prophecies mention horses and their riders, swords, mountains, armor, and their fate is similar; they generate a great stench. The two prophecies are compared in the following table.

Joel 1 & 2 Ezekiel 38 & 39
For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, [1:6]

let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; [2:1]

a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. [2:2]

in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: [38:8]
whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion. [1:6] To take a spoil, and to take a prey; [38:12]

Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? [38:13]

The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. [2:4] and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, [38:5]

And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army: [38:15]

Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap [2:5] And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: [38:21]
They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: [2:7]

They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief. [2:9]

And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army: [38:15]
and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. [2:8] all of them handling swords: [38:4]
Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. [2:8] all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields [38:4]

Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: [38:5]

And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it? [2:11] Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee. [38:9]
But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, [2:20] And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, [38:15]

And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. [38:22]

and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things. [2:20] And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.
And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land. [39:11-12]
